IFSB to Conduct its 7th Executive Programme (EP) on Effective Risk Management for the Islamic Banking Sector

Date Posted: 5 December 2023

Kuala Lumpur, 5 December 2023 – The 7th Executive Programme by the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) is set to explore the imperative of effective risk management in the banking sector under the theme ‘Future of Risk Management and Lessons Learnt from Banking Failures’. Scheduled for 18 to 19 December 2023, the event will be held physically in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The two-day programme aims to delve into effective risk management practices, the future of risk management, adapting to emerging risks and structural shifts in the banking system. Key topics on the agenda include effective liquidity management, supervision enhancements, stress-testing, concentration risks, Islamic deposit insurance, crisis management, digital Islamic banks, cybersecurity, risk management, managing climate-related risks in Islamic banks, and the way forward to achieving financial stability and resilience in Islamic banks.

This trend-specific programme comes timely in light of the recent banking failures in the United States and Europe – where such failures emphasised the crucial need for robust risk management practices. Touted as the worst banking failure since the 2008 Global Financial Crisis, it also led to the emergency takeover of Credit Suisse following a liquidity crisis, that prompted reassurance statements from the European Central Bank and the Bank of England to address public concerns in the aftermath of the collapse.

These incidents outline the critical role of risk management, oversight, and operational resilience in the financial services sector.

As a standard-setting body mandated to ensuring the soundness and stability of Islamic finance, the IFSB remains committed to delivering quality and engaging Executive Programmes. IFSB programs serve as platforms for industry leaders, top management, and regulators to engage in high-level discussions, sharing practical industry experiences and addressing challenges. The EP will also provide participants with insights into the current IFSB standards and technical notes, offering continuous guidance to the industry.
