Kuala Lumpur, November 24, 2006 – Tan Sri Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia will deliver the Opening Address for the Seminar on Islamic Finance: Challenges and Opportunities for Japan, organized by the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) with the cooperation of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and supported by the Japanese Ministry of Finance, the Financial Service Agency, Bank of Japan’s Center for Monetary Cooperation in Asia and Japan Institute for Overseas Investment.
Dr. Zeti will be joined by Professor Rifaat Ahmed Abdel Karim, Secretary-General of the IFSB, and a line-up of distinguished Islamic financial industry experts and practitioners as well as senior officials from the financial regulatory authorities in Japan.
Dr. Zeti was appointed Governor of Bank Negara Malaysia (Central Bank of Malaysia) in May 2000 and is a prominent figure in the local, regional and global Islamic financial services arena. Malaysia is the host country of the IFSB, and Dr. Zeti will be the Chairperson of the IFSB Council for a one-year term starting 1 January 2007. Chairperson of the Council is on an annual rotation basis among the IFSB Full Members, as stated in the IFSB Articles of Agreement.
Dr Zeti will be sharing her vast experience in Islamic finance with over 150 delegates in the Tokyo Seminar, which is aimed at facilitating further understanding of the global Islamic financial services industry among the Japanese financial community. The Seminar will discuss the following topics:
