Kuala Lumpur, 20 April 2018 – The Islamic Financial Services Board’s (IFSB) Annual Meetings 2018 will start on 1 May 2018. with the 10th IFSB Public Lecture on Financial Policy and Stability. The IFSB Annual Meetings 2018 will be held on 1-3 May 2018, hosted by the Central Bank of Kuwait.
The first Public Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Monzer Kahf, entitled Financial Stability and Islamic Finance. The lecture will touch upon the prevailing model and role of Islamic finance in enhancing financial stability, given the emerging challenges arising in the economic and geo-political environment in various regions. The lecture will also cover the financial stability implications of Islamic finance achieving systemic significance in many jurisdictions as well as increasing integration in the conventional and Islamic financial system that requires additional considerations in further developing the financial architecture and enabling environment for the growth and resilience of Islamic financial services industry. The lecture will also suggest developments needed in the legal, regulatory and financial infrastructure of Islamic finance to further achieve its objectives of creating a just, inclusive and stable financial system.
Dr. Monzer Kahf is a Professor of Islamic Finance and Islamic Economics, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Hamad bin Khalifa University, Doha, Qatar and a renowned consultant/trainer. He is also the winner of the Islamic Development Bank Prize for Islamic Economics in 2001.
The second Public Lecture will be delivered by H.E. Dr. Ishrat Husain, entitled Islamic Finance Policies: Implications on Industry Stakeholders. This lecture will focus on policy initiatives needed to build and advance the key strengths of Islamic finance and enhance institutional capacity. While Islamic finance has been considered an important tool to strengthen inter-regional trade, support corporate and SME sector growth and spur infrastructure development, the lecture will suggest interventions and policies to take the industry to its next stage of development and reinforce the robustness of the industry in a more challenging and dynamic socio-economic and tech-oriented environment.
H.E. Dr. Ishrat Husain is the former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan as well as Chairman of Centre for Excellence in Islamic Finance of the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, Pakistan. He was also one the Founding Governors of the IFSB, during its establishment in 2002.
Dr. Bello Lawal Danbatta, the IFSB Secretary-General said “The IFSB Public Lectures are organised in line with the IFSB’s mandate to share and disseminate information on pertinent issues facing the Islamic financial services industry and are delivered by prominent industry thought-leaders, who suggest policy initiatives to further develop the financial architecture of this sector for the attention of industry regulators, market players and other stakeholders. The IFSB then publishes the Lectures with the aim to contribute to the body of knowledge on Islamic finance and promote further dialogue on the direction and stability of Islamic finance.”
The Public Lectures are expected to be attended by the Governors and heads of regulatory and supervisory authorities from various jurisdictions as well as the IFSB members attending the IFSB Annual Meetings. It is also open to the greater financial and academic community in Kuwait, the GCC, and other regions around the globe.
The 3-day IFSB Annual Meetings 2018 will also include other events such as the IFSB Members and Industry Engagement Session, the CBK-IFSB Conference on Islamic Finance: A Universal Value Proposition, and the 32nd Meeting of the IFSB Council (Closed Session) and 16th IFSB General Assembly (Closed Session).
