44th Council Meeting and 22nd General Assembly Concluded with New Chairmanship, Technical Committee Appointment, and New Member

Djibouti City, 2 July 2024 – The Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) successfully concluded its 44th Council Meeting and 22nd General Assembly, hosted by the Banque Centrale de Djibouti (BCD). The meeting was presided over by H.E. Ahmed Osman Ali, Governor of BCD, who serves as the IFSB Council Chairman for 2024.

A significant resolution from the Council of the IFSB was the approval of the nominations for the new term of the IFSB Technical Committee, spanning three years from July 2024 to June 2027. The Technical Committee is pivotal in providing guidance and advice on technical issues, including the adoption of draft prudential and supervisory standards and guidance, and overseeing the work of appointed IFSB working groups.

Demonstrating its commitment to supporting the industry globally, the IFSB Council further approved the admission of Bank Syariah Indonesia as an Observer Member. With the admission, IFSB has 188 members across 58 countries.

During the General Assembly that followed the Council Meeting, the appointment of the IFSB Chairman for 2025 was made. H.E. Abdellatif Jouahri, Governor of Bank Al-Maghrib (Morocco) will succeed H.E. Ahmed Osman Ali, Governor of BCD, and assume the role effective 1 January 2025.

The 44th Council Meeting and 22nd General Assembly were held at the Djibouti Palace Kempinski to discuss ongoing work and future directions. As the 2022-2024 Strategic Performance Plan concludes this year, the 2024 annual meetings set the stage for new directions and transformations that the IFSB will pursue in 2025 and beyond.

The gathering saw the participation of IFSB members, including governors and senior representatives from central banks, regulatory and supervisory authorities, multilateral organisations, and global industry players.

IFSB Secretary-General Dr. Ghiath Shabsigh expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all members for their attendance and participation, acknowledging their significant contributions to the effective governance of the IFSB.
