Established in 1922, the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation (ICMIF) is a not-for-profit voluntary trade association representing 200 member insurers from 72 countries. The principal member services provided by the secretariat are reinsurance, development, training, intelligence (a function which includes a range of collaborative research reports and professional networks), lobbying and a biennial CEO and reinsurance conference.
ICMIF is now working to help develop the Takaful sector by establishing new cooperative-based Takafuls in Muslim and Non-Muslim countries, disseminating knowledge between Takaful operators through; an annual Takaful network meeting, Takaful Xchange Forum, Takaful website and regular Takaful articles. In addition ICMIF has established a Microtakaful Support Centre to promote the role of Takaful in poverty alleviation and is currently developing a Takaful simulation training tool.
There are now twenty-two Takaful and Retakaful operators that are members of ICMIF.
